Antwerp City Park

The biggest park in Antwerp is the 35 acre city park or Stadspark, located in the Jewish neighborhood not far from the Central Station.

When defenses were built around Antwerp in the 19th century, many of the older Spanish fortifications were left unused and as a result the old Fort of Herental was converted into a park by the Antwerp city council. The park was designed by E. Keilig, who based his plans on an English model.

In 1869 a pedestrian bridge was built to span the pond and some time later the iron suspension bridge was added and designed to blend with the artificial rock formations on both sides.

The park also features a large WWI monument, a WWII bunker, a playground, and a number of statues. You'll also come across a broad range of shrubbery and trees. The park is a little too close to the bustling city beyond and so it is hard to avoid the noise of traffic or the occasional glimpse of an office building. Nonetheless, it is still a favorite spot for walkers, joggers, rollerbladers, mothers with children and people feeding ducks. The park is open 24hrs a day, though it is not particularly recommended to visit the park at night.
