It is hard to overestimate the extent to which the diamond business prevails in Antwerp. 85% of the world's rough diamonds, 50% of cut diamonds, and 40% of industrial diamonds are traded here every year. It is an industry valued to be worth about $12.5 billion and accounts for about 7% of Belgian exports. The diamond cutters in Antwerp are among the best in the world and you can see some of their work in the Diamond Quarter - an unexpectedly shabby looking area - located right next to the Central Station. Over 12,000 cutters and polishers work here in 380 workshops that serve roughly 4,000 firms, brokers and merchants.
Many of those who work in the industry are members of the city's Jewish community who have a long tradition of working in the business. This is starting to change however as the industry becomes increasingly multinational. Traditionally the business has relied on a strict code of honor and trust; deals are often made with a handshake.
Along with looking at the shops and perhaps visiting a workshop, a good place to learn more about the city's diamond trade is the Provinciaal Diamantmuseum, or The Provincial Diamond Museum on Lange Herentalsestraat. You'll see some superb exhibits on the history and geography of the business. There are diamond-cutting and polishing demonstrations shown on Saturday afternoons
