Middelheim

Across the Ring highway, just south of the city center you'll find one of the cities' largest areas of green parkland. It is a combination of several parks joined together; the Nachtegalenpark, Vogelenzang and Middelheim. The parks were privately owned up until 1910, when the City of Antwerp purchased the land from the local nobility.

The park is well known as the venue for an open air museum that houses a collection of at least 300 sculptures and other works of art - outside. The idea came from an international open air exhibition that was held here in 1950. The exhibition was such a success that the lord mayor of Antwerp at the time decided to make it a permanent fixture. The museum contains works from Auguste Rodin, Rik Wouters, Henry Moore and Max Bill.

The 67 acre park can be divided into two distinct parts, the Middelheim-Hoog to the south, contains older works while you'll find more contemporary works in and around the Middelheim-Laag area. You can also see some indoor sculpture in the nearby Braem pavilion. The other main building in the park is Middelheim Castle; it was originally a 15th century farm and later converted into a Louis XVI style castle. This is a good place to stop for something to eat; you'll find a find a restaurant inside. The Middelheim park can be found at Middelheimlaan 61. Entrance is free.
